The Gap is a scenic and historic mountain pass in County Kerry, nestled between MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to the west and Purple Mountain to the east.
The gap was carved by glacial activity and stretches for about 11 kilometers (7 miles), offering dramatic views, narrow winding roads, lakes, and rugged mountain landscapes.
See the Gap including its clear lakes, waterfalls, and hiking trails. The underlying rock in the area is mostly Old Red Sandstone, formed over 350 million years ago.
This type of rock is tough but erodible under the force of a glacier, contributing to the valley's clean lines and sheer sides.
It’s a popular destination for walkers, cyclists, and jaunting car tours.
