GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (at least 90 minutes)

We continue along the coastal drive with fantastic views of Whitepark Bay and Portbradden. We visit the 37,000 basalt columns whose tops form “stepping stones” leading from the cliff foot and disappearing under the sea. They reappear in the island of Straffe, hence the legend that this was a road built by the giant Finn McCool to enable him to cross over to Scotland. Truly an amazing wonder of the world!

One of the most popular natural phenomena in Northern Ireland, the Dark Hedges were used as a set for the hit TV series Game of Thrones®. It was the famous King’s Road in Season 2. The hedges were planted by the Stuart family in the eighteenth century. It was intended to impress visitors as they approached the entrance to their home, Gracehill House. Two centuries later, the trees remain a magnificent sight and have become known as the Dark Hedges.

Small picturesque village, Ballintoy was an ideal location for several Game of Thrones® sets. You will recognize the landscapes from season 2 that were used in some of the most crucial scenes in the series.

We travel along the Causeway Coastal route between Ballycastle and Dunluce to experience one of the most dramatic drives in the world, now rated as one of the world’s great road journeys. We transport you by windswept cliffs, spectacular scenery, and fabulous unspoiled beaches.

Dunluce Game of Thrones CastleDUNLUCE CASTLE

We continue a wonderful day with a photo stop at Dunluce Castle, home to the McDonnell Clan for many years and considered the most romantic castle in Ireland. En route we pass through Bushmills, famed for the fantastic whiskey, which is enjoyed all over the world.

Our next stop is Belfast City Center. Here you will have approximately 45 minutes of free time to enjoy and explore this Northern Ireland’s capital before returning to Dublin for approximately 20:00pm.

Most of you will recognize the Dark Hedges as King’s Road from the hit TV series Game of Thrones®. It is a wonderful photo-stop and an opportunity to be a part of a real life set!

Giants Causeway

North Coast Sept 2011

We continue along the Antrim coast with views of Whitepark Bay and Portbradden. The Giant’s Causeway is the highlight of this trip for most! Discover 37,000 basalt columns which form “stepping stones” rising from the sea to the cliffs.
The Giant’s Causeway is reputed to be the walkway used by Fionn MacCumhaill, the legendary Irish warrior who fought Scottish giant Benandonner to win the heart of the most beautiful girl in the Highlands.
Enjoy at least 90 minutes at this UNESCO World Heritage Site !
The path to Giant’s Causeway starts just behind the visitor center, it is only 10 minutes walk! For a token fee there is also a mobility bus that can bring you all the way down the path to the Causeway (for those with walking difficulties or those who enjoyed Temple Bar a little too much the previous evening!)

Next stop is the House of Greyjoy from HBOs Game of Thrones®. In real life, Dunluce Castle was built by the McQuillan family around 1500.
One of Northern Ireland’s premier castles, it is located atop sheer cliffs overlooking the Atlantic ocean – the perfect setting for one of the Great Houses of Westeros. The Castle’s dramatic history of violence, intrigue and rebellion is matched by the scandal and betrayal committed by the Greyjoys in Game of Thrones®.

On our way home we take a panoramic tour of Belfast city, with your guide pointing out some of the highlights of this great city. We will stop near the City Hall for one hour, so you can enjoy some free time in the city centre. Please note: This is a brief visit to Belfast for those who may not have another opportunity to visit, we also offer a full Day Tour to Belfast from Dublin. The Belfast tour spends the entire day exploring Belfast in more detail, and is recommended for those who wish to see more of the city and be immersed in the history and politics of the northern capital.

We relax as we make our way back to Dublin via the motorway, and expect to return to Dublin at approx 8.30 pm after a fun-filled day!
